“The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.” – Phil Jackson
This quote by Phil Jackson helps me reflect on this journey that is SkillCorps. I remember when applying to travel and thinking, well…maybe this isn’t for ME. Me, an SLP, maybe I shouldn’t apply to [what I thought would be] a volunteer trip with its only emphasis as ABA. Well, I have now been with my Nigeria SkillCorps team for 13 days and I feel SO much, that I am definitely a part of “the team”. From, meeting with the awesome staff at The Zeebah Foundation to nightly talks with my SkillCorps team I have definitely realized that there is a place in SkillCorps for collaboration with much more than those who provide ABA services. I am glad to have been able to help the center staff in exploring strategies used for Speech Therapy sessions and brainstorming ideas about individual students. It has been just as awesome to hear the staff and my team discuss the importance of collaboration of ST and ABA. I think with this mindset services for our kiddos can far exceed any expectation we may have. So, whether you’re a BCBA, RBT, SLP, OT or any of the other letters out there; I encourage you to take the step, even if you’re hesitant, to change your perspective on collaboration and join this awesome group of people who, may have different professional backgrounds, but still share a common goal.
