When I was preparing to leave for this trip to the Dominican Republic, people were constantly asking me, “Are you excited?” I was never quite sure how to respond. Besides the fact that I had put off packing until the last possible minute and felt like I still had so much to do, I just wasn’t sure what to expect. I was ready to jump in and find out. The only things I expected were to be challenged professionally and personally.
Those expectations were correct. I have been challenged in so many ways and have learned so much more than I anticipated I would. I have had my thinking challenged and have begun understanding the importance of the “big picture” in building up my own and the skills of others. I have been challenged to always consider sustainability and to question everything. I have been challenged to work as part of a team of people I have only known for 14 days and have realized that it takes so little time to form bonds that will last for years to come.
We only have a few days left here in Santo Domingo, and I know I will continue to be challenged, but also that I will continue to meet those challenges head on and gain skills that I will carry with me forever.
